Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) Radio 4 and The Consulate General of the Republic of South Africa in Hong Kong co-presented a journey of South African song and dance that took the audience through time and genres culminating in what is coming out of a new South Africa today. From the scathamiya singing style made popular by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to the jazz sounds of Sophiatown, to the jive of the townships – it’s the first concert of the annual concert series “Music Beyond Borders” yesterday (22 May 2011, Sunday).
Still remember the song Ke Nako (It’s Time) and the distinctively designed Diski Dance in the 2010 World Cup? As a singer/songwriter, producer and choreographer, Wendy Ramokgadi is the creator of both the song and the dance – the one who got the whole world dancing for the 2010 World Cup with the moves that are truly South African. In the concert, he has directed five dancer/singers in a performance that also featured drummer/percussionist Tlale Makhene – known for his work with international stars such as Japanese Jazz fusion/keyboardist and composer Keiko Matsui and Grammy Award winning singer Angelique Kidjo.
“Music Beyond Borders – South Africa” will first be broadcast on Radio 4 (FM97.6-98.9) and the official website of “Music Beyond Borders: South Africa” on 27 May at 8pm, with repeat on 1 June at 2pm in the programme “Live On 4”. Archives are available on the website after broadcast.
To know a bit more on South Africa, RTHK Radio 4’s host Stacey Rodda recently visited the country and explored its cultural life. Join her on a cultural safari by visiting her blog. Also, every Sunday from 9 to 10am, Stacey will present interviews with the Consul General of the Republic of South Africa in Hong Kong Nomatemba (Tembi) Tambo, Actress Terry Pheto, Artistic Director of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, Florian Uhlig and many more on Sunday Morning on 4. Every Wednesday at 8pm, The Sounds of South Africa will feature interviews with singer Lira, Lebo M and members of South African Ballet Theatre and Opera Africa. Some of these interviews will be available to view (filmed on location in South Africa) on the website.
About “Music Beyond Borders”
“Music Beyond Borders” is a live concert event that showcases unexplored music and unknown artists from a particular nation – beyond our borders. It does this through partnerships between RTHK Radio 4 and different Consulate Generals in Hong Kong. It is now entering its 9th season The concert is a highlight in a month that also features programmes on Radio 4 that focus on the music, arts and culture of that nation. The project was created to make everyone aware of the wealth of excellent music that is out there and to encourage cultural exchange.
